FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT  TIP SHEET

TESTING: We strongly recommend testing a small, inconspicuous spot before starting your whole project. For testing, mix a small amount of the gel stripper with a small amount of the powder in a metal or glass container (ratio of ½ cup gel stripper to 1 teaspoon of the powder). After mixing sample follow steps 2-3 below for testing.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Once the gel stripper and powder are mixed, the lead converting properties of the mixture will last for no longer than 24 hours.

General Instructions For Mixing and Removal:

STEP 1: Wear the gloves and mask provided in the kit before mixing. Open FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ Stabilizer (Powder) package and mix thoroughly with FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ Stripper (Gel). If using a sprayer, then strain the powder prior to mixing. The two components combine to make a semi-paste.

STEP 2: Apply a thick layer of FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ to the coating to be removed by pouring, brushing or airless sprayer. If applying by brush, apply in one direction using an even stroke of the paint brush (do not use back and forth motion). Lay on a thick even layer. If using a sprayer a tip of 619 is recommended.

STEP 3: Don’t brush or scrape the surface until the stripper has had time to work. Check the progress of the stripping action by using a scraper to see if the coating is softened down to the surface. If not, wait longer and recheck. Be sure not to exceed 24 hours after the mixture has been mixed. If longer stripping time is needed due to excessive or tough layers of paint, remove existing stripper and softened coatings and mix a new batch of FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™. Then reapply to coatings not yet removed.

SURFACE CLEANUP: After use, clean residue with Franmar’s EMERGE™ degreaser or water using a cloth or fibrous scrub pad. Allow surface to dry before further preparations.

STORAGE: Store in cool, dry area. Use FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ within 24 hours of mixing.

Disposal For Residential Applications: Aiming to further reduce lead poisoning in children, the EPA has clarified that home owners and the contractors they hire can manage residential lead-based paint (LBP) waste as household waste.

Disposal For Commercial Applications: Test residue by Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and dispose of pursuant to Federal and State regulations.

Solutions to Common Issues and Mistakes:

  1. Mix Thoroughly: Always mix powder and gel thoroughly until powder is fully dissolved into the gel stripper. Poor mixing will lead to poor adhesion on vertical surfaces or ceilings. If FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ seems too watery or runny, then continue mixing. You can let it stand for up to 1 hour to thicken. Do not allow it to dry out or it will be ineffective.

  1. Dwell Time: Allow as much time as possible, 5 hours up to a maximum of 24 hours, for FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ to remove paint.  If longer stripping time is needed due to excessive or tough layers of paint, remove existing stripper and softened coatings and mix a new batch of FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™. Then reapply to coatings not yet removed.

  1. Application Thickness: More layers of paint require thicker application. Rough, porous, or absorbent surfaces require thicker application. One layer of lead paint on a metal surface will require less of FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™. Multiple layers of paint including different types of paint (e.g., latex or oil based) on a wood surface will require a thicker application. Use common sense and your best judgment when applying FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™.

  1. Poor Intercoat Adhesion: This causes premature lifting. FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ pulls paint off the surface by breaking chemical bonds adhering paint to wood or metal or other surfaces. Sometimes, poor adhesion between different layers of paint (e.g., latex paint on top of lead paint) causes FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ to begin lifting the paint at this layer and only softening the lower layer. This will happen quickly – within an hour or two – if at all. Scrape the top layer off and apply another layer of FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ to remove the bottom layer of paint.
  1. Paint Sprayers: Strain the powder and mix thoroughly to avoid clogs. Use an airless sprayer suitable for medium to heavy material. Do not use a filter. Recommended tip size is 619.

  1. Mixing Ratio: The ratio is 1 pound powder to 1 gallon gel. So, ½ pound of powder can be mixed with ½ gallon of gel or ¼ pound to ¼ gallon. The left over unmixed stripper and powder can be sealed tightly (separately) and stored in a cool dry place for several days.
  1. Leftover LEAD-OUT: Do not store after mixing. Use FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ within 24 hours of mixing. Dispose of any remaining FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ in same container as the lead paint waste.

  1. Sun or Wind: Try to avoid direct sunlight or harsh winds. Dry weather can cause FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ to dry out too quickly. Possible solutions: apply FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ at night, cover with plastic, or erect a barrier to block sun and wind. Do not cover with plastic under normal conditions.
  1. Epoxy: FRANMAR’S LEAD OUT™ may not remove epoxy. Apply a small thick sample at 1/8 inch for 24 hours for testing.

  1. For optimum performance apply when air temperature is over 50 degrees (Fahrenheit).
