Decorative Concrete - Tips, Terms, & Techniques

The New Way to Etch!
By Jason Davenport, Franmar Chemical

Jason Davenport has been with Franmar for nearly a decade. His work with customers and experience at trade shows has enabled him to see the decorative concrete market explode. We thank him for sharing his deep knowledge of trends and products with our customers and visitors.

We hear many, many stories of contractors (traditionally those new to concrete) who pour a new floor, put down a sealer or coating a few days later, only to find that the coating buckled and failed months later. This type of problem can be avoided by etching the concrete. The etching process allows the new coating or sealer to bond better with the surface. It’s the same principle as sanding wood; rough up the surface to create a lasting bond.

New products and techniques have made the etching process easy and effective.  VeraSafe from Franmar is a safe and effective acid replacement for etching concrete that not only etches for a better bond, it safely opens up the pores of the concrete so it can even accept a dye or stain color better. This is very helpful, as concrete with tight surfaces that have been polished smooth won’t allow dye or stain color penetration causing numerous problems and a poor end result.
